president obama rejected the latest proposal from john boehner. the president and the democrats are focused on revenue and they are determined to make sure that the top tax rates go up. >> unfortunately, the speaker's proposal right now is still out of balance. he talks, for example, about $800 billion worth of revenues, but he says he's going to do that by lowering rates. when you look at the math, it doesn't work. >> harry reid wasted no time explaining why the boehner proposal is not serious. >> math. you can't get from here to there unless you raise the rates. that's why romney couldn't explain it during the presidential election. no one can explain it because you can't do it. >> jay carney says the speaker's plans raises more questions than answers. >> we don't know who pays. we don't know what we're talking about in terms of actual legislation to increase revenues. it's magic beans and ferry dust. >> john boehner's heavy-handed approach to leadership, boehner and the republican steering committee kicked four republican congressmen out of the

with respect to john boehner. he had to go back to his caucus say, listen, this is a tragedy for us if we continue. >> your prediction is she won't get the 218? >> i'm not going to go on a limb yet. >> wouldn't it be something if she did? wouldn't that be a repudiation of boehner and mcconnell? >> yeah, of course. it would resolve a huge chunk of this issue right away. keep in mind, the senate is sitting there and they have passed a tax cut extension program that the obama administration wants and it would essentially lay the groundwork for getting a quick fix to this fiscal cliff. they could then move on to the spending cuts portion. >> sam stein, "huffington post," good to have you with us. >> go giants. >> stop that. >> had to do that. >> giants are okay. i like the packers better. remember to answer tonight's question question at the bottom of the screen. share your thoughts on twitter @edshow and on facebook. we always want to know what you think. >>> coming up, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell says dem

john boehner is hanging on to their ideological hats. the latest attempt to change the conversation is a plan the american people rejected a month ago. the republican counteroffer to the white house plan relies on $800 billion. the plan does not raise any tax rates on the top income earners. it also contains $600 billion in health care cuts. who has been for that? nobody. there are $300 billion in cuts in mandatory government programs and another $300 billion in cuts to agency budgets and discretionary spending. the speaker's office sent a letter outlining the plan saying new revenue would be generated through pro-growth tax reform that closes special interest loopholes and deductions while lowering rates. oh boy. it's the mitt romney plan again. the offer letter actually described the proposal as the bowles plan. republicans say the plan is based on the outline for the debt commission co-chair. the approach outlined in the letter speaker boehner sent to the president does not represent the simpson-bowles plan nor is it the bowles plan.
